Picking Up Where I Left Off... The Mantle

As I briefly noted, the idea of the mantle came to me a few days back.

Now, what the hell does that mean?! What's so important about "the mantle" that it's worth saying anything about. When it was first brought up, it was in the context of my position in the choir at school. I take care of a lot of things in that choir. There are a lot of things that lie on my shoulders. The idea of me graduating and moving off to college puts the program in a bit of a bind. It's not something that will completely cripple it, but it will just make things a little more difficult. However, since I still have time, I have a choice. I can leave the issue alone and move on, or I can go about it with the intention of "passing the mantle"... giving my position to another.

That's nice and dandy, but does it end there? I don't think so. I have a responsibility to pass on the rest of my mantle. I do so much more than just the choir. I need to make sure that I pass the entire mantle. Does that mean to one person? No. I don't have to find one single person to bare my burdens and my privileges, but I have to make sure that it happens. Why? It's not because if I don't everything will fall apart, but because the knowledge and experience I have is not something that is meant to be horded. It's no good to me if I keep it to myself.

So in that case, what is my mantle? What do I have that's worth passing on? Sure, the choir thing counts, but what else? Do I have something that needs to go to someone else? I believe so, but I don't know what it is. I don't know what else I can give. I know there's something, but I can't think of it. Who will be my protege? Who will take this mantle? Why would someone want my mantle? Why would anyone care? That I don't know, either. Who would want anything from me? Do I have anything of value to someone else? I would hope so, but I just don't know.

I think this will be an on-going question that won't be answered for a while. If anyone has any comments, I would really love to hear them. I'm just a little confused about this.
